Accompanying LynAnn King on this musical Mercer experience is Boston-born Jef Labes, who now resides in Marin/San Rafael, CA. An experienced individual performer in the Bay Area, both alone, and with a singing partner, Labes has worked with many top songwriters and vocalists, including Van Morrison and Bonnie Raitt.
“Jef and I have only been working together for a short time, but we really click musically,” says King. “He’s truly upbeat, so talented and fun! I was a bit star-struck when we first started working together. I’m blessed to have him as our Musical Director.”
Jef is a talented music producer of musicals, recording artist and performer with talent that overflows with fun, laughter, creative and pure artistry. Visit his website at www.jeflabes.com.
Jef says, “I have a wide-range of experience both as an individual performer and working with many song-writers and vocalists including Van Morrison and Bonnie Raitt. I regularly perform throughout the Greater Bay Area as a one-man band, show performances and musicals and now with LynAnn King producing “The Golden Era of Hollywood”. We perform at many types of places and functions including restaurants, bars, stage shows, and private and corporate parties. Including me as part of your event will unquestionably make it fondly memorable.”
Jef believes that entertaining an audience is the most compelling reason he is placed in front of them. They are seldom interested in hearing songs they don’t know, but are usually delighted to hear their favorites in his upbeat and modern style.
Jef has always felt that it’s most important to tell the story of a song, therefore he pays a great deal of attention to the words, and how they are annunciated. He’s not afraid to try a song in a completely new setting or arrangement.
He searches for the new and as-yet-undiscovered grooves every time he performs.
Jef has been performing as a singing pianist for decades with loyal followings in New York City (Hasting’s, Top Of The Gate, Dr. Generosity’s, Sixish, Churchill’s), Los Angeles (Sunset Hyatt, Airport Hyatt, Venice’s Sidewalk Cafe, Nora’s), and the Bay Area (Sonoma Mission Inn, Grand Hilton, formerly Joe LoCoco’s Ristorante, Saylor’s Landing, Saylor’s Restaurant, Bing Crosby’s Restaurant and Piano Lounge, Izzy’s Steak House Danville, Martuni’s Piano Bar, The Curtain Call).
Jef’s experience as an accompanist started as an early teen, playing for various singers in Boston. As I entered the band scene I kept-up my work in bars and restaurants where people always delighted in him adding his own voice to songs. Having worked with several of the great singers of our time (Van Morrison, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Colin Young, Tim Hardin, and Jonathan Edwards) Jef developed a personal style influenced by those associations. Some other influences are Mose Allison, Ray Charles, Dr. John, and Richie Havens.
Jef often appears on my own, as a one man band (complete with many different instrumental sounds, plus bass and drums), as well as with groups of musicians. The types of parties at which he has played include weddings, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, anniversaries, birthdays, fund-raisers, art shows, and just “garden variety” personal house parties.
Jef Labes can make your party fly like no other entertainer you’ve ever hired! He’ll even write a personal theme song for the occasion. You and your guests will have the time of their lives!
